PACK 771 PINEWOOD DERBY PLAYING ETHICS Sportsmanship conduct needs to be foremost in our minds. Parents should teach the boys by example by being good winners and good losers. We have a great many rules to keep this event clean, fun, competitive, and exciting. The fun of entering and the excitement of competing should not be ruined by our desire to win. GENERAL RULES 1. Overall width shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches. 2. Overall length shall not exceed 7 3/8 inches. 3. Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces. No loose materials or weights that shift are permitted. The car may be hollowed out or built up with weights to the maximum weight. The Judges scale is the FINAL authority. 4. It is important that the cars have a 3/8" minimum clearance between the bottom of the car and the ground in order that the car not drag on the guide strip. 5. Springs, washers wheel bearings, and bushings are PROHIBITED. 6. The only lubricant permitted is Graphite. 7. Details such as steering wheels, driver, decals, and painting are permissible. 8. The car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices. 9. No Pre-molded or store-bought bodies are allowed. 10. No cars made during previous years and no cars made by other scouts for other packs are allowed. 11. The parent should help the boy but the boy should do more of the work than the parent or helper. 12. Each car must pass inspection by the Judges before the race. 13. The front leading bottom edge of the car must not be cut so that the starting peg will hold it back until the start of the race. RACE RULES 1. Registration of the cars will be from 9 to 9:30 AM on fourth Saturday of January. Judging and racing will begin at 9:30 sharp and the cars will not be entered after that time. 2. It is important to have your car as close to 5 oz. as possible. You may adjust the weight of your car that morning prior to registering it by adding weights or screws to the body of the car. You may test your car's weight on the official scale during the week prior to the race by calling Frank Freeman and schedule a time to go to his house. 3. Cars will be given an I.D. number on entry. 4. Only the boys will handle the cars during the race. 5. Once the cars are registered, you will NOT be allowed to touch the car until race time. The scout may have an Official add graphite prior to placing his car on the track. 6. Only the boys racing and the Judges will be allowed inside the boundaries of the race track area. 7. If a car jumps off the track, the heat will be run again. If the same car jumps off the track a second time, it will be disqualified. 8. If a car suffers a mechanical problem, and a repair can be accomplished in a reasonable time, the car will be allowed to run again. 9. Awards will be given out for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in these categories: (A) SPORTIEST (B) BEST PAINT JOB (C) MOST ORIGINAL OR UNIQUE (D) JUDGES CHOICE (E) FASTEST TIME (F) FASTEST IN EACH DEN (1st Place ONLY) Please call me for any questions or advice.
